Review of Seconds (1966) by Tonypolito — 14 Aug 2010
Essentially, Rock Hudson wakes up inside a nightmare that is his own 100-minute episode of "The Twilight Zone.".
There's no Rod Sterling up front to creep out the viewer, but titles by the esteemed Saul Bass do the job, as a camera with a highly distorting lens crawls close-up all over the face of a tortured individual - that might just be Rock.
Also as with TTZ, the viewer'll figure out the twist ending well before the end. Another TTZ parallel - solid mid-Century dramatic deliveries from the entire cast, true craftsmanship at work.
The B&W cinematography is also well crafted, sometimes innovative, visually satisfying. Act II contains a rather goofy '60s hippies in semi-orgy' scene that's out of place and context.
Transfer is quite good, originally crafted for LaserDisc. The only extras are a trailer and Frankenheimer's commentary.
RECOMMENDATION: Watchable - and there's some thoughtful messages to contemplate here, but you'll need to be a TTZ or Outer Limits fan to really dig it.
