Review of Seance on a Wet Afternoon (1964) by Neil O — 22 Mar 2011
Myra and Billy Savage lost their son, Arthur, at birth. Since then Arthur has been guiding Myra into tangents of delusions of grandeur. Myra is a psychic, you see, she wants to prove her gift but needs an audience. So she convinces (or is it Arthur convincing him?)her husband to kidnap a young girl, Amanda Clayton.
They hold her at "ransom", but it's not for money. Myra wants to solve the crime by holding a seance. "We're just borrowing a child, Billy." She tells her husband. It doesn't end well for Myra and Billy.
The film's interesting focus is between Myra and Billy and how sad they are as a couple. All caught up in a delusion, especially Myra who is just cuckoo.
Kim Stanley was nominated for her role in this film and when the 1964 Oscars came around it was given to Julie Andrews for Mary Poppins. Damn You Poppins!!!
