Review of Sea of Love (1989) by Daniel K — 11 Feb 2008
It's possible I'll increase this rating in the future. It's definitely a very interesting and entertaining film. It's a compelling story filled with interesting characters and filmed in the greatest city on earth.
It maintains a consistent tone and atmosphere reminiscent of a a Hitchcock picture like Shadow of a Doubt or Spellbound. It kept me guessing to the end as to whether or not it was Barkin. I was inclined to think it was the older lady he made at the restaurant at a couple points during the film.
Barkin basically steals every scene she is in. Pacino is brilliant at times, but I thought it a bit of an uneven performance. The 80's setting didn't bother me at all either. Bregman and Becker have made a film that stands up to the test of time fairly well.
A bit noirish as well, which is always a plus. Barkin's performance is seriously top notch though, worthy of a Oscar nod. Great on screen chemistry between the two as well.
