Review of Se7en (1995) by John M — 03 Dec 2016
Although it's a thriller, Se7en features many elements of horror cinema, and typifies what being a horror fan is about. It's about knowing you shouldn't look, but wanting to - feeling compelled to - anyway.
And the well written script and pitch-perfect performances by Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt make the film itself compelling as a whole. Also, Kevin Spacey's deranged villain is worthy of the utmost praise.
It was this film, together with his turn as Verbal Kint in The Usual Suspects, that cemented him in my mind as one of the best actors in Hollywood. He plays the role of John Doe with a quiet, malevolent menace, but also marvellous, understated glee.
