Review of Se7en (1995) by Suneel J — 23 Nov 2012
It's amazing how smoothly the film transcends from being somewhat uninteresting to the suspense-thriller it finishes as. The beginning is slow, but as the mystery unravels, it tends to grip the audience's attention better.
It is also cool to see how solving the case almost has a deadline on it, with the coming retirement of Detective Somerset. Brad Pitt, alongside Morgan Freeman, gives his best performance second only to "Fight Club".
Freeman is as smart and calm as you would expect in his role as the veteran cop. Their chemistry works with their conflicting personas and passion for solving the case. Kevin Spacey is highly immersing as the villain, leaving us with his haunting memory and crude outlook on society's darkest imperfections.
The film largely relies on historical and religious references, as is evident in its title referring to the 7 deadly sins. The main problem with the film and why it is not perfect is the slightly too slow of a buildup, coupled with the feeling of being a long "Law and Order" episode.
Nonetheless, "Se7en" is quite a unique crime drama that relies on suspense and intelligent twists to remain an excellent film, despite its flaws.
