Review of Scum (2014) by Doc B — 27 Oct 2009
I'd never heard of Alan Clarke before stumbling across this flick tonight, and now I need to see everything the man's done. Scum served to shine a light on the batshit insane abuses in the British borstal system (think juvenile detention, only with poor dentistry). Think Lord of the Flies, only the kids were criminals and in the real world it went on like this for decades.
Really powerful flick with some haunting moments that will definitely stick with you. Kind of feels like a cross between Brubaker and Chopper. It's a film with a message and a shit ton of brutality. Awesome, awesome movie.
