Review of Scrooged (1988) by Jack E — 27 Jul 2009
Scrooged is not very funny, but yet is an enjoyable movie to watch with a pleasant twist on a classic tale. The jokes fall flat most of the time in this movie. Which, since this movie is a comedy, would almost guarantee the movie to fail.
Yet, Bill Murray is able to carry the movie along with some help from the ghosts of Christmas. The transformation that takes place during the movie, by Bill Murray, is not very well done. Between ghosts he should be getting better.
However, that is not the case. The audience doesn't really see any noticeable change in his character, until after the final spirit has visited him. The ghosts are remarkable in the movie. Each one is unique to any original form of the ghosts that we have seen in other films.
The standout ghost in the movie is the ghost of christmas present, played by Carol Kane. She gives the only standout acting performance in the movie, besides Murray. David Johansen does a good job as well, as the ghost of christmas past.
Noone else in the cast stands out. While the audience knows all the details of a Christmas Carol, this really does a good job at putting a unique twist on the portions of the film and what we are accustomed too.
This is a fun enjoyable movie and while it is predictable it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme. This is a pleasing solid movie, and one of the best versions of a Christmas Carol that I have seen.
