Review of Scrooge (1970) by Sarah T — 30 Nov 2010
My favourite adaptation of A Christmas Carol. I just love this film! The acting is superb from Albert Finney - the makeup for the ageing- magnificent, especially given the time. He is so grumpy and bitter but also very endearing, you just want to give him a hug! He also evokes our sympathy and empathy- particularly when fellow shoppers, lost in their own worlds, get completely in his way.
...or maybe that's just me! The support is excellent; Kenneth More, Alec Guiness and Edith Evans, to name a few, are on sterling form. But it's the music that really transports me; it so perfectly captures all the magic and mystery of Dicken's creation and of the nostalgic view we have of victorian London.
I never feel this film received the praise and recognition it deserved, and it's about time it did!
