Review of Scream 2 (1997) by Brett B — 21 Apr 2011
Scream 2 is a completely worthy follow-up to Scream. It's as thoroughly topical (thankfully, never to the extent that it becomes preachy) and suspenseful and funny. It will never be the classic that the first Scream has deservedly become nor will it ever reach the iconic status of Scream, but it is one of the only horror sequels in history to completely live up to its predecessor.
The characters carried over from the first film all have new personal crises to face that are thoroughly engaging even aside from the suspense. The story of Scream 2 is exactly the logical aftermath of the first film and, while standing on its own, it intertwines perfectly with the story of the first.
What Scream was to the horror film, Scream 2 is to the sequel. A potential problem arises if you interpret the moral of the story a certain way, but, hey! Not that many people faulted Wall-E for being hypocritical.
So, who cares that it's a slasher film talking about violence on film and in the media?
