Review of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010) by Sumanjit R — 18 Feb 2013
YES! Despite lackluster ticket sales at the box office, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is an unstoppable force of comic energy brought on by the ever ingenious director, Edgar Wright. Michael Cera stars as Scott Pilgrim, a 22 year old who's essentially the epitome of what it means to be a loser.
While deviling in a very awkward and weird relationship with 17 year old Knives Chau, Scott meets the girl of his dreams.. LITERALLY. Ramona Flowers, played by the always gorgeous Mary Elizabeth Winstead, is a girl with baggage.
. 7 evil exes to be exact. To have the girl of his dreams, Scott has to figure out what to do with the weird relationship he's already in, and defeat Ramona's evil baggage. This film flies at a bullet's pace, but is never confusing or daunting.
The retro music and video game references are at first unexpected but bright and humorous in a way that makes these elements feel like they fit right where they belong in this unique world. Great humor, great action and a memorable trip to Canada make Scott Pilgrim vs.
the World the most fun I've had at the movies all year. It may not be the most thought provoking film, or the most plot heavy, but it quickly slaps those things in the face with 8-bit jokes and coins! 'An epic of epic epicness' is purely an understatement.
At times the film begs the question 'Why waste his energy for a sleaze-bag like Ramona?' but then you remember 'Oh yeah.. I'm rooting for a guy who still dates high-schoolers.' Basically, any problems I had with this film at some point evened out.
THIS ONE ROCKS. CHECK IT OUT.
