Review of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010) by Will%20 S — 20 Dec 2018
"Scott Pilgrim vs the World" is a movie directed by Edgar Wright, and stars Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrim), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Ramona Flowers), and Jason Schwartzman (Gideon). The story follows Scott Pilgrim in a video-game style story, in which he has to fight 7 evil bosses, to win. However, this isn't a video game, this is real life for Scott. His prize is getting to date the girl of his (literal) dreams. This extremely witty movie is entertaining, has great dialogue, and epic fight scenes. The story is quick and and unique, and is definitely enough to keep you watching. The movie has many nods to comic books and video games, and it does those references extremely well. While in other movies with references (such as Ready Player One) thrive off of throwing those references right in your face, "Scott Pilgrim" thrives off of subtly nodding to them, and having you pick them out yourself. There are so many little details in here that you may need to watch this movie around 5 times just to catch them all. Now let's talk about the aforementioned fight scenes. They are super fun and unique. You would think cramming 7 fights into a two hour movie would feel cluttered and boring, but it isn't. The fights are so much more than typical punching and kicking. We have giant beast bass battles, to simple 8-bit sword fights. In between this fight fest we see our main characters grow and change, and have internal struggles. Edgar Wright has a way to make us feel their emotions with them.
So, let's talk about him. His style of directing is super unique, fun, and intriguing. I think he is somewhat of a genius. He has so much symbolism in the small things he does, his transition scenes are the most original things you've ever seen, and he makes you feel chemistry between characters. The movie never unexpectedly slows down or drags out, because something is there all the time. Edgar Wright throws in some random scenes sometimes that are so very satisfying. The movie, might I had, has the least amount of filler I have seen in a while. Now, back to the movie. It is super witty, and full of charm. None of the jokes feel forced or contrived, and all of the little details in the movie will make you at least giggle. The movie is satisfying, and doesn't really need sequel, because it leaves no questions or cliffhangers. Overall, this movie is great, but there are some inevitable negatives along with it.
There aren't many, but I do want to bring them up. Sometimes, the effects in the movie looks very cheap, which isn't good when you are in the middle of a huge fight. There are some unnecessary characters, and they come across as cheap comic relief instead of actually being important to the plot. Also, while I do like Michael Cera, some other actor choices didn't really stick well with me. The movie is pretty hard to find at times. Those are really a few of the things in movie that I didn't like, but it was only a few.
Overall, this movie is really good. The positives far outweigh the negatives in this movie. It's a movie that keeps you wanting, not for a sequel, but for a rewatch. You seriously need to give this movie a try, at least for just one day.
