Review of Scoop (2006) by Tommy H — 10 Aug 2008
I don't know what the fuck is wrong with Woody Allen lately. He's churning out absolute shit like "Scoop" with the regularity and watered-down consistency of the bowel movements someone his age usually exhibits.
What a piece of fluff. There was no substance whatsoever. It played (as most Woody Allen movie's featuring himself do) as set-up after set-up for Woody Allen's one-liners...in the worst way. Often cringe-inducing and rarely relevant, I almost felt embarrassed for the guy.
He and Scarlett Johansson appeared as two-dimensional as I've ever seen either one of them. (Oddly, Hugh Jackman's character is supposed to be a flat, stereotypical stock character but he manages to turn in the best performance in the whole movie.
) I'm seven hundred percent positive that this movie would never have been made had it not been for the attachment of Woody Allen's name (and the names in the cast he was subsequently able to assemble).
There's just no way anyone would greenlight a story like this unless there was some hope for a cinematic genius (presumably Allen) to inject something not contained in the script and add a whole new dimension to the film.
Sadly, there was nothing of the sort injected into this film and I was ready to Eject it about fifteen minutes in.
