Review of School of Life (2005) by Rocky S — 12 Sep 2009
I was surprised to see Ryan Reynolds in a film like this when I caught it on Star Movies so I decided to give it a shot just for the heck of it. It had all the trappings of a made-for-TV movie - the family-friendly plot, the overwhelming use of movie cliches and all that, but in the end it wasn't that bad.
Sure, Reynolds plays the classic "cool" teacher who changes the school culture because of his creative and unconventional methods and more traditional stick-in-the-mud teachers like Paymer's character try to resist the changes.
But then the way the story was told in terms of occasional narration from the son of the old school teacher (pardon the pun) and all the costumes they stick Reynolds in held flesh out the story and give it its unique spin.
On the whole it was a surprisingly good movie and a nice way to spend a random Sunday afternoon at home.
