Review of Schizopolis (1997) by Jesse F — 19 Aug 2007
The thing about Steven Soderbergh's Schizopolis is that you have to go in there with the right expectations. First of all, nothing in this film is obvious. Everything: the point, the story, even the jokes are disguised in subtlety.
In the end of it all however, it brilliantly paints a portrait of the schizophernic modern American society (hence, the title). I applaud Soderbergh for this magnifacent feat. I literally giggled as I saw him defy near every rule of conventional filmmaking that I could think of.
Today, this is a film that will be barely noticed. But hopefully, in the future, the world will realize how brilliant Soderbergh was in his prime, truly revolutionizing cinema. If nothing else about this film interests you, at least see it for the life-changing experience.
