Review of Scent of a Woman (1992) by Evaristo S — 18 Oct 2009
Travel, women, good food, fine wine, the tango, chauffeured limousines and a loaded forty-five, UAAAUUU. Frank Slade is embarking on his ideal Thanksgiving weekend: a first-class flight to New York; a room at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel; dining at expensive restaurants; a personal limousine; a beautiful woman; a bullet in the head. Frank's weekend is the centerpiece of Scent of a Woman, an overlong but involving drama.
Scent of a Woman is a remake, a movie made by Dino Risi in 1974, Profumo di Donna, in which Vittorio Gassman played one of his best known roles. In this movie, Pacino gives a fabulous performance and if you like good acting, this is one movie you shouldn't miss.
There are numerous dynamic scenes in Scent of a Woman, but for me, the best is Pacino's tango scene with Gabrielle Anwar is one such magical moment, unfettered, unforced, and highly enjoyable.
