Review of Scary Movie 4 (2006) by Adam B — 18 Aug 2010
David Zucker brings us his second scary movie, the fourth in the series, and there is no improvement from the 3rd. There's the same old stupid and slapstick comedy as the previous scary movies, but the jokes are becoming increasingly repetitive. Scary Movie 4 has it's moments but there is nothing that is laugh out loud funny, and all it did was bring a smile to my face at the most. There's also a lot more parodies of different films, but similar to 'scary movie 3', half the films aren't even scary films, but in a way I can understand this as it is obvious the director is trying to aim these films at a younger audience now. There is also a lot more reference to popular culture, and I'm sorry, but if I don't find the jokes about popular culture funny now, how the hell is an audience in a decades time going to find it funny.
Anna Farris and Leslie Nielsen are again the main reason to watch this, as they play the only two characters that actually bring some good comedy into the film.
In my opinion, if this scary movie series is going to continue, I think Zucker needs to take a step back because the jokes from scary movie 3 and 4 are getting incredibly old and repetitive. It's a shame because they've almost tarnished Scary Movie and Scary movie 2, which I thought were hilarious. This is an okay film, but nothing special and nothing that made me laugh out loud.
