Review of Scary Movie (1991) by Mike S — 23 Jul 2015

Scary Movie is a typical 2000s parody movie that actually a handful of funny scenes. The story is basically a parody of Scream and nods to other famous movies at the time. This movie was a lot funnier than I expected, and I had no expectations to laugh throughout the whole film.

Luckily a few gags work like any scene with Shorty and the ghost face. The cast's acting was really over the top which I understand because it's this type of movie where it's okay to be but it got really old and obnoxious by the 40 minute mark and didn't help me like this movie a whole lot.

While I did find this movie funny at more than a few parts, I couldn't find any other perks to this film. The cast was pretty funny and all but pretty much every character got annoying by that same 40 minute mark.

The dialogue wasn't groundbreaking in the least which instantly turned me off from considering this to be a well scripted comedy. Not only that but the story wasn't even original. It's basically a really goofy version of Scream which is a phenomenal movie in my opinion and it doesn't do anything different with the material.

Every scene is a play by play of the original except with stupider characters and making them fat or something ridiculous like that. They could've used a similar plot idea but it's really a direct copy of the original Scream.

The thing I disliked the most was all the gross out scenes. It seems like whenever a parody movie is made they always have to amp up the gross factor whether it be vomiting or poop jokes. The whole Doofy character was cringeworthy and just downright disgusting.

The additions of the other popular movies being parodied like the Matrix just felt forced and totally unnecessary. It's called SCARY Movie. The Matrix should not be in a scary movie!! Even though I didn't like Scary Movie a whole lot, a lot of people probably do and it's just because this isn't my type of movie.

If gross out parodies are your thing then this is your movie no doubt. Just don't expect to learn a thing or get attached to a character. C-.
