Review of Scarlet Street (1945) by Anca B — 18 Sep 2009
Pretty slow and plodding melodrama that really only gets good in the second half, then gets pretty good until the end when the film lingers and lingers and lingers instead of just ending. I counted about three possible endings before the real one came up.
Edward G. is pretty restrained in this, doing none of his signature moves, while Dan Duryea is great as a sleazy operator. Joan Bennett is indeed gorgeous, but the script goes back and forth on whether she's got a good center or a nasty one.
With that body, I figure the nasty one.
