Review of Scarface (1983) by Stefan G — 24 Sep 2014
Scarface is classic in a way that I find it hard to describe. It's a highly stylized, yet powerful gangster epic that doesn't waste any time. The story seems to carry mixed messages, but it manages to balance the stylized excess with its subtly moral drama.
The acting is superb, with powerful performances from every character, and each character develops very well. It's as though the main character has an effect on the rest of the cast, dragging everyone he used to love down with him when he starts to fall.
The film is presented very well, with excellent production values and a great overall atmosphere. The violence actually helps the film's atmosphere rather than hinders it, and there's just enough of it that it's very satisfying from beginning to end.
For me, this is the quintessential gangster epic, the one that every gangster film since then has tried and failed to imitate, and it's one of my personal favourite films of all time.
