Review of Scarface (1983) by Dan C — 22 Sep 2012
I was really happy when this was over. Too long, and aside from a few representative scenes, doesn't show the nitty gritty of building a crime empire like Goodfellas or the Godfather, Pt. II. Though there are some hilarious lines in here, it's pretty campy, and I don't like camp.
Can't complain about Pacino, though he is over the top. It's just a mess and I never felt any interest in anything that was going on. And the violence? Maybe in '83 it was a bloodbath, but I think it's pretty tame by today's standards.
Even more gruesome violence, say, showing the chainsaw severing dude's arm and leg, would have heightened the effect.
