Review of Scanners (1981) by Zareh D — 23 Apr 2009
After a strong opening, "Scanners" gives way to cliche, stumbling writing that's only underachieved by the wooden acting. (McGoohan is the one exception, turning in a deep performance this movie doesn't deserve.).
I'm not big on gore, but I'd almost say this movie is worth watching for two really spectacularly done sequences - the famous head explosion at the beginning, and a tense, climactic battle at the end. The special effects have a tangible quality to them that really helps them hold up even today. Reminds you that CGI still has a long way to go.
Cronenberg is clearly an adept director, as well, thoroughly juicing the suspense and marking each scene with a unique visual identity. Unfortunately, the movie doesn't back its strong design and direction with a compelling plot or interesting characters. It's a chore to watch.
