Review of Scanners (1981) by Rob S — 28 Feb 2009
Cronenberg's a pretty smart guy--something tells me even he wouldn't consider this anything more than good fun. Tells of the story of a group of 'Scanners,' who can harness telekenetic energy to make their enemies go into convulsive seizures or, worse yet, make their heads explode.
The settings are camp science-fiction at its finest; the villainous corporation is named Biochemical Amalgamate for Christ's sake--here, and throughout, Cronenberg nails the lean cool of exploratory budget pictures.
His own additions in the D.I.Y. effects department include filling a latex head with dog food and rabbit livers and blasting with a shotgun--and yeah, it's a doozy. With Stephen Lack as hero Cameron Vale, acting so "badly," that you'll be glad to learn that the script calls for speech as his second language.
