Review of Scanners (1981) by Mike M — 16 Mar 2012
Cronenberg's Scanners, while engaging in spurts, ages poorly when viewed in 2012. Computers with green LED display; motor vehicle accidents inside record-stores; characters smoking inside malls - rarely has a movie been SO of-the-time as to take a future viewer of the flick OUT of the movie.
That being said, I could easily see this get a big budget remake. The storyline remains compelling, and the movie (while dated) is still a cult classic for all the right reasons. I mean, how many times do you get to see a head explode THAT well?!? The unheralded Michael Ironside is devilish as the lead baddie.
Worth a revisit, but get ready for all that is late 70s early 80s Canadiana for a backdrop.
