Review of Scanners (1981) by Ryan V — 09 Oct 2014
Writer/director David Cronenberg crafts a grotesquely unique mixture of the sci-fi, horror, and spy genres with 1981's Scanners. The plot follows a troubled hobo (Stephen Lack) who is conscripted by a defense contractor on account of his telepathic abilities.
He's tasked with hunting down a rogue telepath and his cabal of outlaws, but our protagonist also finds some unsavory facts about his origins. Like Psycho or Thelma & Louise, Scanners is largely remembered for only one scene.
However, like with those other films, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
