Review of Saw IV (2007) by Mike G — 29 Mar 2015
Yes, this film does exist and yes it is absolutely terrible. It is hard to actually conjure up effort to write a critique of this film, as after now watching essentially 4 of the exact same movies, made by the exact same people, getting marginally more terrible as they go along, has became something of a chore.
So Jigsaw is dead, his prodigy Amanda is dead, in fact a lot of people are dead at the hands of this lunatic. But even in death Jigsaw still has time to play games, oh yeah, thats right, Jigsaw never sleeps, the games have only just begun! When Jigsaw's body goes in for an autopsy, the coroner finds a tape in his stomach, a tape which suprisingly enough wants the police to play another moral game, I would go on but im pretty sure you can guess the outcome.
Now what is different here, is that heavy exposition on Tobin Bell's character in flashbacks, how did Jigsaw become Jigsaw, genuinely good idea, treated so cliched and predictable, having us as the audience have to make a huge jump in faith, in order to believe certain events turned him into a psychotic, morality murderer.
The acting this time around is mince apart from Tobin Bell. The plot is just all over the place, you have no idea who anyone is, you dont know why or what is going on. The torture has no effect what so ever.
The franchise just keeps thrusting things in our face like, "Look here is this new guy we cast and hes integral to the plot from the start because.... well because if we dont make something new up, the film cant have a twist and audiences wont come back next year and spill their hard earned cash on this.
..." It looks meh, it sounds meh, the gore doesnt shock, its not scary, its not thought provoking, its not meaningful in any way. It gets half a star for Tobin Bell and half a star for using practical effects.
Everything else is just a shambles.
