Review of Saw (2004) by Jorge Eduardo S — 22 Jun 2012
While the series has since gone on to its routine of spectacle gore and traps, we shouldn't forget that it started with an incredibly tense and clever thriller. The performances are good all round and the script is pretty good too.
The story gradually unravels as time goes by, leading to one hell of a twist ending. I've got to give a special mention to the set up, considering how the series slipped into its own clichà (C)s of elaborate traps producing over the top bloody deaths.
Here, there's none of that. Just two guys locked in a bathroom playing a psychotic mind game. Truly one of the most inventive and important thrillers of all time.
