Review of Saving Mr. Banks (2013) by Alex T — 19 Jan 2015
This film, although humanising the writing of such a well loved book and film, is, for me, a pointless exercise. Travers is depicted as inhumane initially, and essentially the film's purpose is to uncover her vulnerability through the recollection of her childhood relationship with her alcoholic father.
In all honesty, this film could be wrapped up in 20 minutes, and it's long duration, only frustrates and bores the audience. Thompson and Hanks are not terrific but any means, but Colin Farrell's performance as Mr Travers, is laughably bad.
Sure, some will cry when Travers watches the musical, at its premiere, but that is the only emotion I felt, other than boredom, during this film. Well intentioned, perhaps, but this script is nowhere near enough to make a decent movie from.
