Review of Saving Mr. Banks (2013) by Caz H — 06 Apr 2015
This was definitely a Disney film, very sentimental but ultimately enjoyable. The performances from Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks, with a lovable side performance from Paul Giamatti, made it shine for me.
Individually I liked how her backstory was presented, it was incredibly heartbreaking, and then I did also like the drama of her struggling to let go of her beloved Mary Poppins and the changes the film would make.
However I found the interweaving of the two tried to hard to smack us in the face with the idea that everything she did stemmed from her childhood trauma and that could all be fixed from Walt Disney understanding that and encouraging her to let go.
Whilst I did enjoy the film I was also left with an uneasy feeling and several times throughout I wanted to shout okay, I get it. But then maybe it is aimed more at children, or as a simple family film? Not sure.
