Review of Saving Mr. Banks (2013) by Francisco S — 22 Jun 2015
I watched this and enjoyed what I thought was a real backstory behind a favorite childhood film. Hanks, Thompson and Giamatti have fine performances. All the sentimental elements made me curious to read the real story though.
In reality, most of the significant aspects portrayed in this film are not only romanticized but often the opposite of what really occurred. Its one thing to have revisionist history but quite another for Disney to do it so blatantly as to tell a complete yarn that makes themselves look good when in fact Travers hated Disney enough to never work with them again and forbid any of her works ever being adapted by them.
Many of the emotional scenes that pack a punch not only did not ever happen but neither did some of the characters exist. Apparently this is how Disney wishes things had turned out.
