Review of Saving Face (2004) by Amanda M — 20 Jul 2005
The contrast between Asian culture and modern American life is well portrayed by first-time director Alice Wu in this smart romantic comedy. The entire cast performed beautifully, most notably Joan Chen who plays Ma, a widow that becomes pregnant by an anonymous man and the mother of a lesbian daughter.
The story of Wil, played by Michelle Krusiec, coming to terms with her traditional Chinese-American family in the midst of falling in love is shown well. The only major plot fault is that by comparing the situation of mother and daughter, Wu takes much of the believability out of Ma's reaction to her daughter telling her that she is gay.
The ending is a bit overly nice, but this a great relief after all the years of depressing lesbian films. All-in-all a sweet comedy perfect for a first date or (when it's released on DVD) a romantic night at home.
