Review of Saved (2009) by Douglas R — 03 May 2009
Did I enjoy this movie? I can't exactly say I enjoyed it. I felt a little guilty watching it. The Church isn't making a movie about Hollywood--is it really fair for Hollywood to make a movie about the Church? Mandy Moore's character seems to be a bit of an exaggeration but perhaps, not quite as radical as it may seem.
As I was watching, I couldn't shake the feeling that this was indeed the way the outside world views us. There has been a lot of criticism about how the most "Christian" characters (Hilary Faye and Pastor Skip) were two of the most unlikable in the movie but wait a minute, wasn't the Pastor's son also a Christian character? Just because a person doesn't go around spouting Bible quotes every five minutes or trying to save every "sinner" they come in contact with doesn't mean they are not a Christian.
I could totally see this movie being shown at Messiah because it challenges you to think about your faith. Definitely a movie I would watch again. On the movie aspect of things, where the hell has Macaulay Culkin been hiding for all these years? He gives a strong performance that no one in a million years could have possibly seen coming.
I wasn't crazy about how they made the "unChristian" characters make smoking look cool. Isn't time we got passed that in movies? I hope people realize not all Christians are Hilary Faye's.
