Review of Savages (2006) by Private U — 22 Jan 2009
One of the best screenplays in recent years, probably better, all things considered, than the 'Juno' script. I've never been a Laura Linney fan, and her performance in this is no exception to her streak of obvious choices and frenzied, put-upon, deeply unattractive, unsympathetic femininity.
Hoffman, on the other hand, is muted and small, and that fits better into Jenkins' aesthetic of compromise and death. A rare observational, behavioral, adult would-be comedy.
