Review of Sausage Party (2016) by Harry G — 23 Dec 2016
I generally like Seth Rogen's movies, but this movie BARELY makes sense. The food wrappers are anthropomorphic but also the food inside? And not other items? It's fervent about this nonsense aspect too, which adds to the humor, but only sometimes. For some reason the characters have gloves and shoes, but only SOMETIMES?! WHAT IS INSIDE the taco character?! We never see a side view, and I have to imagine it's for no reason other than the writers were lazy/dumb. If you're expecting a clever take on anthropomorphizing characters, this isn't it!
The plot was a very preachy morality play, barely strung together by a bunch of C+ jokes, which the writers went a LONG way to incorporate in. So the bagels AND the juice represent jews? They thought both of those jokes were strong enough that they had to keep both of them?!
And what the fuck was that ending? They couldn't have ended it 2 minutes earlier? They've really screwed up their last few endings.
More than anything, don't make a moral play telling people to turn on their critical thinking, and then make a movie that doesn't make any goddamn sense!
