Review of Sauna (2008) by Renato L — 31 Oct 2008
I definitely liked this one. Quite much, indeed, although it's not flawless. The scenario is quite evocative, and dialogues are well written. Lighting is awesome and directing is good, although there are quite a few pretentious close-ups of the main characters.
The horror shown in the movie is never defined, it creeps around and hides in shadows, it hits you suddenly from behind the corner and disappear again, and when it finally comes in daylight, it is not shown on the screen.
We only see the consequences of its passage, and when the movie ends we are left with a lot of questions. I would define this as some "metaphysical horror", as it deals with concepts as "sins", "conscience", "judgement".
I was very delighted to see Finnish movie icon Kati Outinen playing a small role in the flick. After Käsky, another excellent movie from Finnish film industry. Voiko se merkitä nousun alkua? :).
