Review of Sauna (2008) by Isee D — 01 Nov 2009
The movie takes place in 1595 as 2 brothers set out to finalize the boarders with Russia for Sweden after the war. They end up discovering a small unmapped village in the middle of a swamp and it is there that the sins of their travels catch up to them.
Something that stands out is the way the characters are not developed as much as they're revealed. While one is softer than the other Sauna let's you draw your own conclusions as to whom you like and whom you don't but it really doesn't make that decision for you.
Being left to your own devices however can be a blessing or a curse. When watching a film that does this I find it must have a fair amount of substance and Sauna just barely does. It is very well acted and filmed, that along with the unique time and setting make it enjoyable to some extent but not enough to make you think about it too much afterwards.
