Review of Saturday Night Fever (1977) by Platinumglitchmint P — 25 Sep 2011
Its easy to forget after all the spoofs and parodies and countless drunken disco antics , how good a film Saturday Night Fever really is both as a time capsule and a drama about growing up in a tough neighbour hood.
Tavolta is great as Tony Manero who works ina dead end job but at the weekend becomes a face in a New York Nightclub where his dancing is all he lives for.
Its a plus that Travolta makes Manero belivable and despite the fact he has little culture and is very immature Tavolta gives him that human heart that another actor might not have been able to convey.
Badhams direction is solid and of courseTHAT soundtrack is what drives the film into its calssic status .
But never forget in its 18 certificate form the film is full of bad Language ,Drug use and casual sex all thanks to Norman Wexlers brilliant screenplay which simpy allows this nightlife to come into our rooms.
Of course its funny to laugh at the polyester and flares and the Bee Gees falsettos ,but one should never forget the film still feels like a punch to the stomach in some places and 30 years later thats a rare thing in films of that period .
