Review of Satantango (1994) by Erin E — 19 Mar 2008
This is a masterpiece. That is all I can call it. Bela Tarr knows how to do it and does it perfectly. Watching this in one sitting is highly recommended, because a person really has to get in the zone, but once you're there, there's no getting out of it.
Every single take is absolutely beautiful, and gives off such an aura of despair, decrepitude, and a sense of complete hopelessness. The shots themselves are set up in the most fascinating and mesmerizing way - if I could pick one adjective to describe the whole.
.. experience, if you will, "mesmerizing" would be my word of choice. Living in this film for 7 and a half hours is something I am definitely going to do again. The art of the long take is something that you just have to give yourself over to, and it swallows you.
