Review of Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town (1970) by Matthew D — 26 Nov 2018
A Christmas classic of stop motion magic!
Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass aka Rank and Bass directed Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town (1970) with a gleeful wonder. They bring the magic of Christmas to life by depicting the origins of Santa Claus in all his life story with their adorable felt puppets.
All the vivid colors, clever writing from Romeo Muller, detailed puppets, fluid animation, and iconic mythology with memorable songs culminate in Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town being a timeless classic. Families of all ages can come together to enjoy this sweet little story.
Rank and Bass made their own fable to Kirs Kringle and brought a fast paced, concise narrative, and sweeping epic journey to this kids movie.
The voice acting is perhaps the most joyous aspect of Rank and Bass' movies besides the cute animals. Fred Astaire, Mickey Rooney, Keenan Wynn, and Paul Frees are particularly delightful in Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town.
You should watch this one as it is one of Rank and Bass' more complex stories for children. The animation is groundbreaking for stop motion and everyone from Elf to Adventure Time can cite this film as a clear influence.
