Review of San Andreas (2015) by Judge L — 25 Nov 2015
San Andreas is a good, bad film. As disaster movies go it sticks faithfully to all the cliches of the genre. The characters aren't believable and the script goes exactly where you expect it to. The special effects, which are the real stars of such movies, are fairly impressive.
There's the odd dodgy bit of green screen, but the pace of the action keeps your interest throughout. The one unexpected bonus is the calibre of the cast. All embed some credibility into caricatures and even some empathy.
Johnson and Gugino have actual chemistry and as utterly preposterous as their continued survival gets whilst thousands around them perish, you do actually want their family to be reunited in the finale.
Against the odds, San Andreas survives the colossal cracks into plausibility and delivers a silly, but fun ride.
