Review of Samurai Spy (1965) by Max M — 08 Mar 2009
Though this is a Samurai picture on the surface, the story is straight-forward thriller - a spy thriller to be exact - hence the title.
The serpentine plot is sometimes hard to follow (make sure your DVD remote is handy) but the end result is a damn entertaining piece of Eastern political intrigue with some terrific swordplay scenes framed in a beautiful widescreen image ( I always say, if you want to learn how to shoot in widescreen, watch Japanese films. The sense of composition and movement and lack thereof is extraordinary).
