Review of Sam's Song (1969) by Robin W — 26 Sep 2007
The ultimate Robert De Niro curiousity piece, as the young unknown De Niro appeared in a film called "Sam's Song" in 1969 that was never completed - only to have his footage mixed together (to his horror, I'm sure) with newly shot footage ten years later and released as "The Swap".
De Niro's scenes are passable enough, but the newly shot footage is so amateurish, poorly paced and badly acted that his oddity is often a chore to sit through. Contains one of the all-time classic bad lines when the ex-convict hero exclaims: "It's been twelve years since I had a mayonnaisse-and-peanut-butter sandwich.
Now that's what I call cruel and unsual punishment!".
