Review of Salt of the Earth (1954) by Martin N — 24 Sep 2011
Created by blacklisted professionals (and later made impossible to see), this film is a slap back at HUAC, featuring non-professionals in a moving (though never simplistic) tale of a miners' strike in New Mexico.
Not only dramatizing the difficulties (and ultimate payoffs) involved in worker solidarity but also tackling racism and sexism. Ultimately, it is the miners' wives (and widows) who save the day. An alternate reality for America that was successfully beaten down?
