Review of Sakuran (2006) by Kimberly P — 13 Aug 2007
I'm surprised that people think this is a geisha film. They couldn't be more wrong about that. This is a film about oirans or prostitutes. So, in other words, oirans aren't as pure as geishas.
The film was okay. Visually, it was colorful and artistic. I got through the story without complaints. It has a happy ending, so yay. My only problem with the film was the music. My mind was set on more traditional music you'd hear playing for those pretty dances, but all you get most of the time is some rock music which isn't bad considering that it's coming from the fabulous Shiina Ringo.
The more I thought about it, I figured, since the film is about a bad-mouthed prostitute who's rather rebellious, the music I didn't find suitable actually complemented the movie quite well. The film has an all-star cast of young Japanese artists, so if you're a fan of those jdorama actors, you'll eventually spot them in this film.
I'd probably recommend this for the guys, not to say that girls won't like it, but that guys will probably enjoy it more.
