Review of Sakuran (2006) by Ron A — 14 Sep 2008
Wild, vivid colors and costumes, especially if you like red, and a modern music background bring the world of courtesans (oiran) of 17th-century Yoshiwara in Edo (today's Tokyo) into the present day.
Think of a dreamy, colorful, at times sensuous "Memoirs of a Geisha" ("Sayuri"), but perhaps with more of the feeling of the subtleties of Japanese culture. Beautiful camera work, and still shots are fine (to those complaining about this).
With English subtitles, thanks to lead star Anna Tsuchiya being popular in Europe.
