Review of Sakuran (2006) by Dave R — 23 Jan 2008
I'm in two minds about this film. On the one hand, it's poorly directed, acted, and written, and the characters keep changing personalities so much it's hard to keep track. On the other hand, however, it's probably the most stunningly beautiful and colourful movie I've ever seen.
Any frame could be printed and made into a postcard. If you've just bought a HDTV and you want to take it for a spin, get this movie on Blu-Ray or HD-DVD and let your eyes melt out of their sockets.
And then, of course, there's the reason I downloaded the film in the first place - the excellent soundtrack by Shiina Ringo (most of which can be found on her 2007 album Heisei Fuzoku). So, part of me wants to give it a 1.
5/5, and another part of me wants to give it a 4.5/5, so I'll settle for 3/5.
