Review of Saints and Soldiers (2003) by Ben J — 23 Jun 2007
Low budget, no big name actors to speak of, no hype or advertisement, and a Judeo-Christian worldview; all this sounds like it would add up to a piece of uninteresting celluloid. On the contrary, "Saints and Soldiers" is just the opposite.
It's no "Saving Private Ryan", or even "Bridge on the River Kwai", but it's still quite good. No big battle scenes or explosions to speak of, but this movie is still more than just entertaining and thought-provoking.
The interplay between the characters is displayed with honesty and can be at times humourous, depressing, disturbing, and uplifting. At its core, this movie is not about the glory or even the ingloriousness of war; its about humans thrown together into an ugly conflict and how the all react differently to circumstances that are nothing short of horrific.
Again, there's not much blood or fighting, but that's not to say the movie is devoid of conflict. This movie is very good and deserves more recognition than it has recieved.
