Review of Saints and Soldiers (2003) by Keith J — 04 Dec 2008
Amazing what can be done on such a low budget (less than $1million).
At first I had some qualms with the atheist/Mormon thing, especially since the filmmakers are Mormons -- I wonder how the atheist character will be portrayed? But despite a couple of grating moments, the end of the film gave the plotline a good sense of purpose which would have been missed had it not been there. The British character in the film throws out all sorts of cliches: "Cheerio", "Fag [for cigarette]", "Bugger", etc. We get it, he's British.
Regardless of these minor details, though, the film is outstanding from both a production and storytelling point-of-view. Again, amazing for such a low-budget film. Exactly what every amateur filmmaker should strive for.
