Review of Saint Laurent (2014) by Wesley B — 08 Jun 2015
Vastly better than initial reviews suggested, Saint Laurent is an impressionistic take on the designer's early career, a pell mell race through inspired designs, serious partying and intense sexual experimentation.
Though not necessarily a window into the man's soul, the film captures both the hedonism and radical underpinnings of the seventies without losing sight of the mistakes and damage left in its wake.
The real hero of this piece may well be Pierre Berge, Saint Laurent's lover and business partner, who tries to be everything for the one he loves but knows enough to step back and save his own life.
A fascinating, often insightful film, with solid performances all around.
