Review of Saint John of Las Vegas (2010) by Cathe J — 26 Jan 2010
I think St. John of Las Vegas is going to be to Steve Buscemi what Fargo was for Bill Macy. Yes, I know he was in both- but seriously- he is the astonishingly masterful artist in this role- and nothing he has ever done will compare to how great he is here.
Fortunately, I saw this in a film festival setting, in Las Vegas, as a local. This made me realize that, yes there are some unrealistic location ideas- there's no lottery in Nevada, for one. BUT, that didn't matter to me at all.
The script is one of the best character driven, smartly dialogued pieces I've seen in quite some time. The acting is comparable to a day watching Dame Judi Dench and the late yet still great Danny Kaye- blaring out keen intuitive interactions plus impeccable comic timing.
I plan to buy this movie on DVD, give it away as a gift to my friends as an example of what a GREAT movie should be, and I will surely watch it long after I have teeth in my head, and interest in shaving my legs.
I love this film.
