Review of Safety Not Guaranteed (2012) by Ryanski K — 01 Apr 2013
I loved this movie! It's a science fiction film. But I don't think I've ever seen a sci-fi story where the major theme is whether or not we're watching science fiction. Most of the film involves quirky, likeable characters revolving around one quirky, likeable character who's building a time machine.
Or maybe he isn't, he could just be quirky, likeable and totally bats**t crazy. But that's the fun here, the power of possibility draws us in and generates some great laughs and the character's (nearly all of them) hunger for redemption adds poignancy.
The director, Colin Trevorrow, walks a tightrope while balancing a lot of odd balls deftly. The film left me with a stupid smile on my face.
